Credit Unions are an alternative to banks.

Members pool their savings together and lend to one another. The Credit Union in Leeds is called Leeds City Credit Union.
To open a Credit Union Savings account you will have to join the Credit Union.

When joining the Credit Union, you will usually need to provide proof of ID and of address. Once you have joined the Credit Union you will be called a member of that Union and you can start saving and taking out your money.

What you need to take with you

You will need to show the Credit Union:

  • documents proving your identity – eg your Biometric residency permit,
  • your immigration status – your letter from the Home Office
  • your address – this could be a letter from the Home Office, bills sent to your address with your name on, letters from the Jobcentre or Department of Work and Pensions (DWP).

All documents need to be current (i.e. Passports need to be valid) and all letters need to be dated within the last 6 weeks.
